WR, Mike Matthews Listed As a Breakout Player in 2025 for Tennessee Football

The Tennessee Volunteers enter the 2025 college football season fresh off a CFP appearance. If they are going to improve on a year ago, WR, Mike Matthews will need to be a difference maker.

The Tennessee Volunteers are entering the 2025 college football season fresh off a CFP appearance in 2024, the school’s first. Now, as they are in the midst of the spring practice portion of the offseason, there are still takes flying from national media.

According to ESPN, Tennessee’s ranked 19th preseason, and their biggest breakout star in 2025? Well, it will be sophomore WR, Mike Matthews.

Here’s what ESPN had to say about Matthews:
“Matthews came in as a five-star receiver last season as a freshman but didn’t provide much production for a Tennessee offense that was lacking in explosive plays. He briefly flirted with transferring after the season but decided to return and is somebody the Vols desperately need to blossom and give them some firepower in the passing game. Matthews caught seven passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns last season. He has big-play ability written all over him, and with Tennessee losing seven receivers from last season’s team, there’s a chance for Matthews to live up to his billing.”

There’s no doubt that the Vols will need drastic improvements at the wide receier position. Dante Thornton and Squirel White are no longer on this roster, along with five others, and they already struggled a year ago at the position. Matthews needs to be the star that he was recruited to be.
