WT baseball set to meet No. 3 Angelo State in Canyon for Lone Star Conference showdown

The West Texas A&M baseball team has a big opportunity this weekend.

After starting the year 24-7, ranked as high as No. 23 in the nation, the Buffs have dropped five of their last six games heading into the team’s series finale against LCU on Monday afternoon. WT was defeated three out of four times by St. Mary’s, then dropped its first two games against the Chaparrals before bouncing back with a 16-6 win on Sunday afternoon.

Following a tough stretch, the Buffs have an opportunity to build momentum in few days when Angelo State makes the trek to Canyon for a big-time Lone Star Conference showdown.

The Rams were ranked No. 3 in the latest NCBWA poll, and currently boast a record of 30-7 on the season after taking down No. 21 St. Edwards in the first two contests of a four-game series. The Hilltoppers won the third game of the series, and the two teams will play the finale on Monday afternoon.

A series win against Angelo State would be a huge boost for the Buffs as Cory Hall’s team looks to find its rhythm again ahead of the postseason.

“From a mathematical standpoint, just the standings in the conference and the regional rankings, it’s huge” Hall said. “We’ve got to find a way to get some ballgames if we want to be serious about making a run at this thing.”

WT closes the season with series against Texas A&M International and Texas A&M-Kingsville before the LSC tournament begins on May 2nd.

To pull off an upset of the Rams, the Buffs will need big performances at the plate from players like Dylan Fesperman, Jovan Camacho and Ryan Camacho, as well as strong outings on the mound from the team’s pitching staff.

WT’s series against ASU kicks off on Friday, April 11 at 4 p.m. from Wilder Park in Canyon. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday before closing the four-game series on Sunday afternoon.
