The fans were informed that they could be arrested if they’re seen at an MLB event during their banishment.
The banishment of the two Yankees fans who tried to rip a baseball out of Mookie Betts’s glove during Game 4 of the World Series will last into the 2025 season.
Both fans have been “indefinitely” barred from attending any MLB games, The New York Post‘s Dan Martin reported Friday.
The two fans, Austin Capobianco and John P. Hansen, received a letter from MLB informing them of their indefinite ban, according to the Post.
“Your conduct posed a serious risk to the health and safety of the player and went far over the line of acceptable fan behavior. Based on your conduct, Major League Baseball is banning you indefinitely from all MLB stadiums, offices, and other facilities,” the letter reportedly read.
Additionally, MLB informed Capobianco and Hansen that they could be arrested if they’re seen attending any game while their ban is in place.
The two fans stole headlines during the World Series when they interfered with Betts in the first inning of Game 4. As Betts ran to the right field line and made a grab on a pop out by Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres, one of the fans reached into the Dodgers star’s glove and the other yanked on his wrist.
Torres was immediately called out due to interference and the two were ejected from the game. A day later, both fans were banned from attending Game 5, which the Dodgers won to clinch the World Series.
It had been previously reported that the two fans were season ticket holders. However, they were using different season-ticket holder’s seats to attend Game 4. That season-ticket holder will still remain in possession of his tickets, which he’s had since 1990, according to Martin.
As Betts won his third World Series title shortly after the incident, he initially played it off cool.
“When it comes to the person in play, it doesn’t matter,” Betts told reporters after Game 4. “We lost. It’s irrelevant. I’m fine. He’s fine. Everything’s cool. We lost the game and that’s what I’m kind of focused on. We got to turn the page and get ready for tomorrow.”
However, Betts changed his tune when asked about the incident during Peacock’s “2024 Back That Year Up” with Kevin Hart and Keenan Thompson in December.
“I would really say [expletive] you guys,” Betts said. “[Expletive] you guys.
“Trying to get the ball, cool. But like, you tried to grab my [expletive],” Betts added. “Like, you trying to take the glove and [expletive]. I didn’t even feel the dude grab my arm. I was in the moment.”
Betts also thought about getting retaliation at that moment.
“I thought about throwing the ball at him,” Betts said. “Then I realized, Mookie, you ain’t gonna [expletive]. Yeah, you ain’t gonna do [expletive]. Go back to right field.”
Instead, MLB handled the discipline for the two fans — who now won’t be able to watch any Major League Baseball for the foreseeable future.
