The Pittsburgh Pirates are interested in outfielder Alex Verdugo, reports Robert Murray of FanSided.
Verdugo is coming off of a season with the Yankees in which he hit 233/.291/.356 with 13 home runs and 61 RBI — a down year for the 29-year-old slugger.
The Yankees acquired from the Red Sox last December but his offensive production plummeted in his walk year, hurting his market in free agency.
After the Yankees lost to the Dodgers in the World Series this past year, Verdugo expressed his interest in staying in the Bronx.
“I just really started thinking about it right now,” Verdugo said. “We’ve got some things to think about. I definitely want to be back in pinstripes to help us win one.”
It’s unlikely that Verdugo will return to the Yankees after the least productive season of his career, but the Pirates could be a fit for him.
“They are all also looking for additional offensive reinforcements, and I do know that one name of interest for them is Alex Verdugo,” Murray said. “I don’t believe anything is imminent there by any means, but he is a player that they do like.”
