Yankees Projected To Cut Ties With $15 Million Free Agent Infielder

The Juan Soto sweepstakes will consume the New York Yankees’ offseason, but Soto isn’t the only key player they have entering free agency. Starting second baseman Gleyber Torres is now a free agent and he may be less likely to re-sign than Soto.

Luckily for New York, it’s much easier to replace Torres. But the easiest replacement for him would just be to re-sign him in free agency.

However, Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report seems to think Torres is headed elsewhere on a one-year deal. Kelly predicts Torres to sign a one-year contract worth $15 million with the Seattle Mariners.

“Whether it was early in his career at shortstop or more recently at second base, the two-time All-Star has never graded out well defensively. But a team with an opening at second base — and perhaps some at-bats available at DH — will take a chance on him if they think his best years are still ahead of him offensively,” Kelly wrote. “Torres may only sign for one year, but if he has a rebound season, whatever team signs him this offseason could extend him a qualifying offer next winter.”

The Mariners would benefit tremendously from adding such a high-upside bat to their lineup. If Torres returns to form, he could routinely smash 30 home runs again.

For the Yankees, they would need to work to replace Torres in this scenario. They could either acquire a second baseman or move Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base and acquire a third baseman.
