It’s Sunday once more, and you know what that means — it’s time for our weekly social media roundup! This was a busy week for the Yankees, who saw the position players report to camp, the first games of the spring, and the end of a 50-year-old policy forbidding beards. How are the Yankees handling these major developments down in Tampa? Let’s find out!
Beards, Glorious Beards!
The Yankees shocked the baseball world on Friday morning, announcing that the franchise’s ban on facial hair below the lip was over and that the team would now permit well-groomed beards. Former Yankees immediately expressed their opinions on the matter, with Derek Jeter and CC Sabathia certainly approving.
Not everyone was happy, however. When the news came down, Johnny Damon — you know, the guy known for having to shave his caveman beard when he joined the Yankees — took to Instagram to complain about the change.
When the news came out, a friend of mine texted, “Somewhere, Johnny Damon is seething.” As it turns out, she was right, but I don’t think that this was what she had in mind.
Photo Day
Among the team activities in the first week of spring training is media day, as the team records all those epic-looking clips to put on the stadium scoreboards and in the broadcasts. This year, the Yankees social media team turned it into a bit of an event. First, several players were handed video cameras to provide an inside perspective for the fans.
Luke Weaver, meanwhile, got his own video for the day — Weav’s World.
To wrap up the day, several players posted the results on their social media page.
CC and Didi visit camp
Spring training is a time for former players to swing by camp and serve as guest instructors. 2025 Hall of Famer CC Sabathia had been in attendance for a few days, working with the pitchers, where he found out that coaching was a bit more difficult than he expected it to be.
Didi Gregorius, meanwhile, made his first appearance at Yankees spring training since leaving in free agency after the 2019 season. First, the artistic infielder spent a day as a cameraman, complete with a press pass. The next day, he returned as a guest instructor — and in fact, he took some ground balls at third base!
Happy Birthday, Schmidt!
The Yankees’ social media team gave Clarke Schmidt a cupcake for his birthday this week.
Question(s) of the Day
Last, and certainly not least, we have this week’s Questions of the Day. As it turns out, the YES Network social media team got in on the action, so we have twice the number as we had last week.
To start off, we learn what type of merchandise (cookies) the Yankees like to purchase from the mob (the Girl Scouts).
Then, we’ve got the players asked to name a random NBA player. You can tell who actually follows pro basketball, as several guys listed players who I can only assume are the NBA version of Jayson Nix, while others simply said “LeBron.” Disappointingly, none of them mentioned current Knicks, although a couple of former Knicks were brought up.
Later in the week, in a more baseball-related post, we learned when they hit their first home run.
The Yankees official account was meanwhile more interested in their golf games.
Last but not least, we heard about who to ask for dinner reservations.
