Yorktown, O’Connell alums seeing significant college-baseball action

A number of former baseball players from Yorktown and Bishop O’Connell high schools had seen significant action for Division I and III college teams this spring through April 21 games.

The list from Yorktown includes James Tallon (junior pitcher, Duke University), Kyle Langley (sophomore outfielder, James Madison University), Jack Rucker (freshman pitcher, Richard Bland College), Chase Rubin (junior pitcher, Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Ketz Murray (sophomore pitcher, Marymount University).

The left-handed throwing Tallon was 0-1 with a save and had struck out 28 in 22 innings.

Langley was batting .225 in 37 games. His 27 hits included four doubles and a home run and he had 16 RBI, including two sacrifice flies. Langley had stolen 14 bases in 16 attempts.

Rucker, a lefty, had appeared in nine games, including eight starts, and had a 1-3 record. He had 35 strikeouts in 31 innings for the junior-college team in Prince George County, Va.

Rubin, a righty, was 3-3 in 28 innings with 13 strikeouts. Nine of his appearances included two starts.

The right-handed Murray was 1-1 with 20 Ks in 23 2/3 innings. He had thrown one complete game.

A list of O’Connell graduates include Jack O’Connor (junior pitcher, University of Virginia, Bobby McDonough (sophomore pitcher, University of Massachusetts Amherst), A.J. Murray (freshman pitcher, Bucknell University), Michael Powell (freshman infielder, University of Pennsylvania), Michael Lavanga (freshman outfielder, Harford Community College), Tom Bourque (pitcher, College of William and Mary) and Ben Cogar (pitcher, Moravian University).

The right-handed throwing O’Connor had appeared in seven games with a save. He recorded his 100th career college strikeout this season.

McDonough had appeared in seven contests and the righty had worked 25 1/3 innings with a save and 13 strikeouts.

Murray was 0-2 in 10 appearances. The right-hander had fanned 12 in 15 frames.

Powell was batting .222 with six doubles and five RBI.

Lavanga was hitting .284 with four doubles, a triple, two homers, 19 RBI and eight steals in nine attempts.

The left-handed throwing Bourque had appeared in 13 games and had 19 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings.

Cogar, a righty, was 1-0 in three appearances.
