10 local players to watch in men’s college basketball in ’24-’25

With the college basketball season in full swing, here are some players from Southeastern Minnesota to watch who are now playing at the Division I, II and II levels.

Will Tschetter, University of Michigan (Stewartville)

The first player from Stewartville to ever play Big Ten basketball is now a redshirt junior forward at the University of Michigan. Will Tschetter – the 2021 PB Boys Basketball Player of the Year and runner-up for Minnesota’s Mr. Basketball – played in 31 games, with six starts last season, averaging 6.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. He also recorded his first 200-point season (210) during 2023-24. So far this season, Tschetter has played in all four games, scoring 28 points for the Wolverines with an average of 7.0 ppg.

Mason Madsen, University of Utah (Mayo)

After bouncing around from Cincinnati to Boston College, Mason Madsen is now a fifth-year guard at the University of Utah. He played his first two years of college basketball with Cincinnati before transferring to BC for his junior and senior seasons. Last season with the Eagles he played in all 36 games, starting in 15. He was second on the team in three-pointers with 60 and third with a .377 shooting clip beyond the arc. This season for the University of Utah where he is playing alongside his twin brother Gabe, Madsen has 50 points and 11 rebounds in four games (12.5 ppg, 2.8 rpg).

Gabe Madsen, University of Utah (Mayo) 

Fifth-year guard Gabe Madsen is in his fourth season at the University of Utah after spending his freshman season at Cincinnati with his twin brother Mason Madsen. Last season, G. Madsen was Utah’s single-season leader in 3-pointers made with 105. He started in all 37 games, averaging 32.6 minutes and 13.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.3 steals, and helped lead Utah to the NIT semifinals. This season, he leads Utah in most minutes played (118). Starting in all four games, he has recorded 85 points and 12 rebounds (21.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg).

Aeron Stevens, Southwest Minnesota State University (Plainview-Elgin-Millville)

Plainview-Elgin-Millville 2023 graduate, Aeron Stevens is a sophomore forward for Southwest Minnesota State University after a solid showing as a freshman. Stevens played in all 32 games for the Mustangs and was second on the team in scoring and rebounding with an average of 11.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. He also set a team freshman record with 127 free throws made on 174 attempts. Stevens is off to a nice start this season with 71 points (23.7 ppg), 21 rebounds (7.0 rpg), five blocks and four steals in three games for the undefeated Mustangs.

Jaden Wysocki, Minot (N.D.) State University (Century)

Jaden Wysocki, a 2022 Century High School graduate and former All-Big 9 player, is a redshirt sophomore forward in his third season at Minot State University in North Dakota. Last season, he played in 11 games, recording three points, 10 rebounds, four assists, one steal and a blocked shot. Wysocki has put up 16 points (5.3 ppg), eight rebounds (2.7 rpg) and four assists so far for the 5-0 Beavers.

Shaun Wysocki, Minnesota State University, Moorhead (Century) 

Jaden’s younger brother, Shaun Wysocki, is a freshman forward at Minnesota State University, Moorhead. S. Wysocki is fourth on the team in scoring with 30 points (7.5 ppg) through four games. With the Wysocki brothers both playing in the Division II Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, they face off twice during the regular season on Dec. 20 and Feb. 5. S. Wysocki is also a Century grad.

Eli King, University of North Dakota (Caledonia)

University of North Dakota junior guard Eli King played at Iowa State for a season, before transferring. He has notched 16 points, 13 rebounds (5.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg), four steals, three assists, two blocks through three games with UND so far this season. Last season, King had 149 points, 78 rebounds, 42 assists and 33 steals in 21 games with the Fighting Hawks. King was a finalist for Mr. Basketball his senior year at Caledonia.

Noah King, Upper Iowa University (Caledonia)

Eli’s older brother Noah King is Upper Iowa University’s leading scorer (76 points, 19.0 ppg) through four games. The redshirt junior guard started in all 32 games for Upper Iowa last season and had the second-most points on the team with 558 (17.4 ppg) and 133 rebounds (4.2 rpg) and 72 assists (2.3 apg). He recorded a career-high 27 points against Southwest Minnesota State. N. King started his college career at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Ryan Heise, Upper Iowa University (Lake City)

Ryan Heise is in his second season at Upper Iowa University after redshirting his freshman year. Heise has played 63 minutes in four games with 18 points (4.5 ppg) and 10 rebounds for the Peacocks. He put up a season-high 10 points in the season opener against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside

Nate Heise, Iowa State University (Lake City)

Ryan’s older brother, Nate Heise, transferred to Iowa State for his last season after playing four impressive years at Northern Iowa. The redshirt senior has 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals through three games this season for the Cyclones. N. Heise started in all 32 games he appeared in at UNI last season, leading the team in scoring and minutes with 431 points (13.5 ppg, 32.9 minutes per game). The Heise brothers are both graduates of Lincoln High School in Lake City, along with their sister Taylor who plays in the PWHL for the Minnesota Frost.
