College Basketball: Wiley men stumble against No. 12 LSU-Alexandria in season opener

Wiley University men’s basketball player Tayvion Fisher scored a career-high 25 points off the bench however, it wasn’t enough as the Wildcats fell 84-70 against No. 12 Louisiana State University of Alexandria in Saturday’s season opener at Alumni Gymnasium.

Fisher hit eight of nine shot attempts, including 3-for-4 from 3-point territory. Preseason All-Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference selection Demarius Pitts followed with 19 points on an 8-for-14 shooting performance. He shared the team lead in rebounds with Devon Barshow, who contributed 11 points. Jalen Bates, Fisher, Pitts and Barshow each recorded two steals.

The Wildcats (0-1) outshot the Generals 40.8 to 40% but made eight fewer field goals, hitting 20-for-49 while LSUA sank 28 of 70 shot attempts. Wiley was edged 43-39 in rebounds, allowing 18 on the offensive boards. The turnover battle went to the Generals as Wiley gave up 25 and forced 18.

Wiley only made one field goal in the first seven minutes of the game, which allowed LSU-Alexandria to build a double-digit lead. It trailed by as many as 13. Three-pointers by Fisher and Shamir Mosley closed the margin to six with 3:32 remaining. Bates got a steal and dished to Fisher to pull the Wildcats within four. LSU-Alexandria hit a shot and made four free throws to take a 41-32 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Wildcats only hit one shot in the first six minutes, which helped LSU-Alexandria push the lead to 15 points. Wiley could not make a rally.

The season-opening homestand continues on Nov. 2 with the Wildcats facing Arkansas Baptist College for its 2024 Homecoming game.

Women’s Basketball

LANGSTON, Okla. — The Wiley University women’s basketball team could not execute offensively in a 91-28 season-opening loss against Langston University Thursday at C.F. Gayles Fieldhouse.

It’s the first time the Lady Wildcats have fallen in their season opener since 2021. They shot 15 percent from the field (9-for-57) with 28 attempts from 3-point territory — only hitting two. Wiley turned the ball over 25 times, leading to 29 points for the Lady Lions.

Celebria Peacock and Jessica Nerestant led the team in scoring with seven points each. Elizabeth Camacho led the team with eight rebounds. Mary Leday and Erin Love tallied assists. Nerestant recorded two steals. Kewaysha Alsup and Nyathiel Wal each blocked a shot.

Wiley (0-1) struck first but only made one field goal in the first quarter and was held scoreless for over four minutes. It didn’t make another field goal until Peacock hit a 3-pointer in the first minute of the second quarter. This allowed Langston to build a double-digit advantage and add to it.

The Lady Wildcats will open its home schedule with its Homecoming Game at 2 p.m. on Nov. 2 against Texas Wesleyan University in Alumni Gymnasium. The Rams were picked to finish fifth in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
