3 QUESTIONS
…about Diwali
Today is Diwali, and I celebrate! Anthony asked me about the holiday’s meaning and how it’s observed.
Anthony: For the uninitiated (like me), what is Diwali?
Divya: Diwali is the festival of lights. Its origin is partly connected to the Hindu epic Ramayana, in which the deity Ram defeats the asuras (demons). Diwali marks Ram’s triumphant return home. Each year, we celebrate that triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.
Anthony: How is Diwali typically celebrated?
Divya: It’s a little different for each region in India. Growing up, my South Indian family would wake up before sunrise, massage sesame oil into our hair before a bath, put on new clothes and pray. Afterward, we’d light lamps, share sweets and set off fireworks.
Anthony: What’s a good way to support a friend who’s celebrating Diwali?
Divya: No binding rules for me! If your friend is having a Diwali gathering, just show up ready to feast. To me, much of Diwali is about making — and sharing — good food with loved ones.
