Early season transfer portal winners: Kentucky’s rebuild thriving; Adou Thiero stock up; UNC’s Seth Trimble

We are less than five games into the 2024-25 college basketball season and while it is still extremely early, there are already several players from the transfer portal catching our eye and making a big early splash. The transfer portal has proven to be an amazing tool for programs to quickly rebuild, add one or two players of need, or for a new coach in a new location to flip the roster.

Just look at what Louisville’s Pat Kelsey did when he was hired — the Cardinals added 13 transfers out of the portal to completely rebuild the roster. Or look at Duke and Jon Scheyer. Knowing he had a blue-chip class of freshmen coming in Scheyer handpicked veteran transfer to structure the team around star rookies Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, and Khaman Malauch.

John Calipari, the new head coach at Arkansas, leaned heavily on the transfer portal, as did his replacement at Kentucky, Mark Pope. More on those two programs below.

As more games are played we’ll get a better idea of the true winners and losers from the transfer portal. But now just over two weeks into the college basketball season let’s take a look at the names and programs making an early splash with transfer portal success.
