Legendary broadcaster retires from MLB play-by-play after 42 years

Another legendary baseball voice is retiring.

The Athletic reported Friday that Bob Costas is walking away from the mic after 42 seasons of baseball play-by-play.

An iconic broadcaster across many sports inlcuding the NFL, the NBA, boxing, golf and NASCAR, he is also known for hosting NBC’s Olympic coverage between 1992 and 2016.

But baseball is the sport he’s most associated with Costas often saying it is his favorite.

His last game was on TBS for the American League Division Series between the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals.

He has also done games for MLB Network in recent seasons. Costas confirmed the news and plans to address his decision on Monday’s MLB Tonight at 6 p.m., according to MLB.com.

He called games on NBC from 1982 to 1989 and again from 1994 to 2000. He has also called games for ESPN, ABC and CBS during his long career.

He was one of the announcers for the 1995 World Series and then the main play-by-play voice for the Fall Classic in 1997 and 1999.

He joined TBS in 2021 to serve as studio host for its coverage of the National League Championship Series

He received the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcast excellence from the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018.
