Just like last year, the Odessa College women’s basketball team was dealt its first loss of the season by Dodge City Community College.
Playing in the first day of the Wrangler Classic, No. 8 Odessa College fell to the Lady Conquistadors 88-55 Thursday at the OC Sports Center.
Last year, Dodge City Community College defeated Odessa College 82-78 in the Wrangler Classic.
This year’s meeting was a little more lopsided as Dodge City Community College took advantage in the first half and didn’t look back.
“I think coach Franqua Bedell is a good coach and his teams always do a good job,” Dodge City Community College head coach Landon Steele said. “We made some shots in the end and switched to a zone and as soon as we did that, it took the wind out of their comeback. But that’s still a good team.”
Odessa College fell to 2-1 while Dodge City Community College improved to 2-0.
The Lady Conquistadors were coming off a 99-55 win against Western Texas College on Monday.
Dodge City went 34-of-66 from the field and 13-of-35 on 3-pointers while going 7-of-9 on free throws.
Layla-J Cameron was the leading scorer for the Lady Conquistadors, scoring 25 points while Tayah Morgan had 18 and Shorna Preston finished with 14.
Odessa College was led by Juliet Escomchukwu ‘s 15 points. Caitlin Staley had 11 and Jada Jones finished with nine.
Odessa College went 20-of-54 from the field and 2-of-16 from 3-pointers while going 13-of-22 on free throws.
Both teams are coming off NJCAA national tournament appearances from last year.
Dodge City Community College began the game on an 8-0 run before Odessa College called a timeout.
The Lady Wranglers’ woes continued until the end of the quarter as Odessa College trailed 18-7 heading into the second.
The Lady Conquistadors built a 30-13 lead in the second quarter.
A free throw by Odessa College’s Caitlin Staley made it 33-18 with 2:43 left.
The Lady Wranglers’ deficit was 35-21 at halftime.
Odessa College began the second half on a much more promising note, going on a 10-5 run to narrow the gap.
The Lady Conquistadors, however, used a 6-0 run to build a 46-31 lead.
Both teams traded baskets and Layla-J Cameron’s inside jump shot was responded by a 3-pointer by Odessa College’s Jada Jones to make it 51-38 with 3:59 to go.
A layup from Mireia Mustaros brought Odessa College to a 55-44 deficit late in the quarter.
The Lady Conquistadors’ lead was 58-46 heading into the fourth quarter.
Things wouldn’t get any easier for the Lady Wranglers.
A layup by Morane Dossou gave the Lady Conquistadors a 74-50 lead with 3:58 remaining.
Odessa College will next face Bishop State (0-2) at 6 p.m. Friday at the OC Sports Center.
Dodge City Community College will face New Mexico Junior College at 4 p.m. Friday at the OC Sports Center.
Bishop State lost 72-48 against Salt Lake Community College on Thursday in the first game of the tournament.
