Those two New York Yankees fans aren’t coming back.
Calling it “egregious and unacceptable physical contact”, the Yankees announced in a statement Wednesday afternoon that the two fans who interfered with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Mookie Betts during the first inning of World Series Game 4 would not be allowed to attend Thursday’s Game 5.
According to an ESPN report, the two fans, Austin Capobianco and John Peter, had been told they would be allowed back despite grabbing Betts’ glove and prying it open to free the ball on a fly ball by Gleyber Torres along the right-field wall on Tuesday night.
“The safety and security of players, fans and Stadium staff is the foundational element of every event held at Yankee Stadium, and it cannot be compromised,” the Yankees’ statement read.
YANKEES vs. DODGERS:What to know about World Series Game 5
“Tonight marks the final home game of year, and we want every ounce of our fans’ passion on display. Yankee Stadium is known for its energy and intensity, however the exuberance of supporting one’s team can never cross the line into intentionally putting players at physical risk.
“The Yankees and Major League Baseball maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward the type of behavior displayed last night. These fans will not be permitted to attend tonight’s game in any capacity.”
Capobianco, who is reportedly a season-ticket holder, and Peter were removed from Tuesday night’s game. Torres, the Yankees’ leadoff hitter, was ruled out due to fan interference by umpire crew chief Mark Carlson.
The Yankees went on to stave off elimination with an 11-4 victory over the Dodgers in Game 4 behind a go-ahead grand slam by Anthony Volpe.
The two teams will play Game 5 at 8:08 p.m. on Wednesday night in the final home game of the season at Yankee Stadium.
The Dodgers lead the series, 3-1, with a chance to secure their eighth World Series crown. The Yankees can send the series back to Los Angeles on Friday night with a victory.
